Troop 53
2008 Philmont Expedition

Registration and Signup Information

Philmont arrowhead patchFirst, let's discuss numbers. We have a reservation for a "crew" which is comprised of 7-12 youth and adults. We must have at least 2 adults over 21, cannot have more than 4 adults, and must have a majority of youth (i.e. at least one more youth than adult). So we have space for 12 participants which could be 10 youth & 2 adults, 9 youth & 3 adults, or 8 youth & 4 adults. On the other end, the least number of participants is 7 which could be 5 youth & 2 adults or 4 youth & 3 adults. Committee Chairman Jim Maule and I have discussed this and have agreed on the following:

  1. We will give preference to youth (see previous page for the definition of "youth") over adults up to 10 youth.
  2. In the event there are more than 10 youth interested, preference will be given to the older Scouts, since the younger ones may have another chance to go either with Troop 53 or on a council contingent.
  3. Preference will be given to parents of attending youth over other adults.

Fees and other money issues

Payment Schedule

As mentioned, the fee for Philmont for 2008 is $560.00. This is broken into 3 payments:

Payment deadline Amount
January 23, 2007 $50.00*
September 25, 2007 $255.00
February 19, 2008 $255.00

* This "reservation fee" is not refundable in the event you cannot, or decide not to, attend. It is transferrable within Troop 53 if someone else is wanting to take your place.

All checks for fees must be made out to "Troop 53".

Possible payment plan

Jim and I have also discussed a possible payment plan so that you won't have to plunk down such significant wads of money. Basically, $50.00/month per participant would allow us to make all payments to Philmont on time and, assuming participants make payments each month from January, 2007, through July, 2008, gives us an initial working budget of $950.00/person. It's not a big deal if you miss a month or so, but be aware that you must have enough money in your "account" to cover fees by the deadlines above or you will be responsible for any balance owed.

Other funds and opportunities

Our incentive program normally applied to summer camp fees may be applied to Philmont. The participation period that would count toward Philmont is March 1, 2007 through February 29, 2008. Additionally, Fall 2007 popcorn sales ($1.00/item sold) may be applied as well. We will also be discussing money-making projects specifically earmarked for Philmont.

Other important information

All potential participants must read Philmont's Risk Advisory and Weight Limits document.
